Joplin

# 16
Scott Joplin: Maple Leaf Rag, Stark Music Co. 1899. 5pp. Folio, large format. First trade edition, second issue. The first issue of Maple Leaf Rag was issued privately, the rag became such an instant hit that Stark bought the rights and issued it in an edition with Joplin's photo, and because they didn't want to identify it with a black composer, they quickly reissued it in the famous green Maple Leaf cover and in later issues with the modified green cover, with different advertisements on the verso. Our copy is the true second issue with Ophelia Rag advertised on the back cover. The private edition and the first Stark edition are incredibly rare, they would sell in the $10,000 range, but are so rare as to be unobtainable. The second issue is also rare. Usually these are in poor condition, but this copy is very fine. A great prize of American popular music.
